Spencer Perkins earned his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Texas State University. He moved on to obtain a Master of Music degree in piano performance from Kent State University. Currently, Spencer is pursuing a Master of Music in music composition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Spencer began teaching piano privately while studying at Texas State University, and continued teaching as a part of the Teaching Institute Program, while attending Kent State University. As a graduate assistant at Kent State, Spencer also instructed two undergraduate courses in group piano. He believes that it is important to provide an open-minded environment when teaching, allowing each individual student to develop a personal connection with their music.
Spencer has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in Texas, Ohio, and Nebraska. In July of 2013, Spencer was invited to participate in the Interharmony International Music Festival, performing as a soloist and as part of a piano trio in Arcidosso, Italy.
As an accompanist, Spencer has collaborated with solo instrumentalists, and vocalists. While in attendance at Kent State University, he also served as the graduate accompanist for two of the university choirs.
As a composer, Spencer has written for solo instruments, as well as for chamber groups, and large ensemble. His works have been premiered in Ohio and Nebraska, with another premier to take place in upcoming May, in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
